Indirect TPMS and Direct TPMS

How To Distinguish Indirect TPMS and Direct TPMS?

Indirect TPMS and direct TPMS are two different types of tire pressure monitoring systems. The most direct way to distinguish them is whether a vehicle pressure sensor is required.

Direct TPMS uses direct tire pressure sensors on each wheel to measure tire pressure, while indirect TPMS uses no sensors. Indirect TPMS often use anti-lock brake system (ABS) speed sensors to calculate pressure.

Indirect TPMS and Direct TPMS

In terms of accuracy and real-time performance, direct TPMS directly detects tire-specific sensors, so the data is more accurate and real-time. Data from indirect systems are estimates derived from other vehicle systems and, therefore, may be less accurate and real-time.

In terms of installation cost and complexity, direct TPMS service requires installing sensors on each tire, which is slightly more expensive and more complex to install. Indirect TPMS does not require additional sensors.

In terms of fault diagnosis and location, direct TPMS is better than indirect TPMS, and fault diagnosis and location are relatively easy.
